RK Cattle Company
RK Cattle Co. is a working cattle ranch owned by Kent and Rose Bacon. It is located in the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. RK Cattle Co. specializes in starting, backgrounding and grazing cattle on the lush Flint Hills pastures in a very traditional way. For example, horses are used to check and handle cattle daily. Indeed, we consider our horse the most valuable “ranch hands”. Our dog, Misty, helps us and the horses do the ranch work necessary to keep the cattle safe and healthy.
The pastures on our ranch have varied terrain: sparkling spring fed creeks; tree lined rocky bluffs; flat bottom ground lining the creeks; and rocky hills and ridges. This diversity in terrain provides a home for the native prairie grasses to flourish. Our ranch headquarters is nestled in the valley of Four Mile Creek, surrounded by the splendor and elegance of our pastures on the rolling Flint Hills.
Cattle work varies through the season but involves corralling, herding, health inspections, and marketing. We also undertake repairs of fences, pastures, creek banks and everything that needs to be done in order to ensure the safety and health of our cattle.
There are numerous activities our guest may partake in. But they get an opportunity to see a working ranch at work every day they are with us. Among the activities they can enjoy are the following:
Participating in the daily chores that are going on when the guest is on the ranch
- Guided horseback riding
- Educational sunset walks
How We Operate
Our riding activities are personalized. This means, when you are our guest, you and your group are the only ones we have. This ensures that we are able to provide you with the most attention and improve your experience on our ranch. Our guided tours not only show you our property and explain how things get done, we teach you about the Flint Hills and its importance to the life of the people who live here, the flora and the fauna and how they all link to the rest of humanity.
What to Bring
Depending on what you are planning (and we will work with you in ensuring your time with us is extraordinary!), we advise you bring some basic things to ensure your outdoor experience is both safe and enjoyable.
